M600i Touch Screen Calibration

I thought I had to send it to the shop again to get that touch screen calibrated. Luckily, the first Google search result returns a forum post that tells you how to do that yourself, using the built in setup wizard. To do so, go to Tools > Control Panel > Others > Setup Wizard, and on the 6th step, you'll be greeted with the calibration tool. Neato! I don't even remember seeing this when I first received my phone and went through the setup steps. Anyhow, it's there, so knock yourself out.

So what calls for the calibration? Simple, my M600i died on me. How? No idea. But probably on account of the team karaoke night. The night after when I whipped out the phone, it was off and I thought "Great, it automagically shut down itself for no good reason." and tried to turn it back on. No dice. It was stuck at the boot up screen. I was devastated. After numerous futile attempts, I had to give up and dig out the trusty X800 which drained the battery like there was no tomorrow.

That weekend, I went to the SE service center annexed to the Sony Gallery in Wisma Atria on Orchard Rd. to get the damned thing fixed. After waiting in the queue for what seemed like 3 hours, I was told that because the phone was bought out of country, it was going to be treated as out of warranty. Way to go, SE! On account of that, I had to sign a form stating that SE Singapore was not to held responsible for additional damage while servicing the phone. And I would have to pay a 15 SGD fee just to have it examined. The following week I received a call from the service center telling me that the repair charge would be in the tune of 4 or 5 hundred SGD. Yeah right, that's about the price of the brand new M600i.

So I made a call to Senao and sent the phone back to its Taoyuan service center. The only drawback is that they wouldn't send it back to me, not even if I gave them my address in Taiwan. It had to be picked up in person. Well, that's fine by me as long as the phone is brought back to life. It probably took them only a day to service the phone. Because it should take about a week for the package to go from SG to TW and I sent it out on a Tuesday. The next Saturday I saw my dad updating his Google Calendar with an entry of picking my phone. Senao told my dad the main board had to be changed. Thank god the phone was still in warranty.

When the phone finally got back in my hand, I set it up like I did before it died and fired up my favorite app, SCUMMVM, to play one of my all-time favorite, Monkey Island. That's when I found out the screen needed calibration. The thought of going back to the SE service center here was horrifying I put up with the off pointer at first for days. It as amazing I never thought of googling this issue. Well, I am glad that muse on the toilet half an hour ago paid off.

Goodbye Taiwan. Hello Singapore.

Finally it comes the time again for me to leave Taiwan. I'm excited to meet all the new faces in the Google Singapore office, yet at the same time I feel sad to leave my family and friends behind. But I can't sit still and not moving forward. C'est la vie.

So here I come, Singapore!

M600i syncing in OS X

It's a bummer that iSync doesn't work with the Sony Ericsson M600i. No matter, there are still ways to get Address Book contacts and iCal events onto the M600i.

For contact cards transferring, this blog entry tells you how to do this. Just select the contacts you wish to transfer in Address Book and go to menu item Card and click Send This Card.

For iCal events, p990iCal gets the job done. Yes, the name implies that it's for P990, but the exported .vcs file is compatible with M600i and W950 as well. Download it here.

BonziBuddy strikes back!

Rejoice! Spyware-haters! BonziBuddy is back, with a vengeance!

The infamously annoying purple monkey now speaks Mac OS X as well. This brings back memories. The fun my college roommate and I had making it speak hysterically retarded things.

Go ahead, download the widget and make its day. [note: the author assures that there is no spyware included.]

For crying out loud, get rid of her!

Dear lord, NCIS needs to get rid of that particularly unpleasant beast of a woman, to quote DiNozzo, Ziva David. Pronto!

Kate getting snuffed was quite a sad and shocking twist. But to replace her role with that shemale is nothing short of jumping the shark. That ugly face, especially those manly eyebrows which outdoes The Mole in Goldmember, along with the horrid laughter always make me think that the field team is sausage only. That thing is unbearable to watch I have to be careful not to land my eye sight on its face while watching the show.

One thing I like about NCIS despite its off-base depiction of computer tech is the dynamics between each members of the team. Instead of filling the gap Kate left behind, Ziva contaminates it with her forceful acting. Come to think of that, she is either a great actress who brings the fiction character to life or an incompetent who simply ruins it. Her presence in the show has out-of-place written all over.

I never thought that it'd be possible to have the best TV character and the worse in the same show, until I watched NCIS season 3. I'd rather watch a 12-episode-McGeek-marathon than to see her face. Geez, even Sam Cassell can be called a beauty compared to her.
